On Monday the 9th, we had an art lesson where we initially created folders for all our work. Then we had to place some paper over textured surfaces to rub off the texture onto some paper with charcoal, granite, and chalk. After completing that we cut out shapes of different body parts and assembled them on more paper to create our own hybrid creature. We also named our creature, gave it characteristics, and made it unique.
The following Thursday we learned how to use Photoshop to edit our pictures. On the upper left is the original image and to the right is the improved picture with the help of Photoshop and Paint.
Max Ernst.
Max Ernst was born in 1891 and lived till 1976. He was German (naturalized American in 1948 and French in 1958.) He was many things; a poet, graphic artist, printmaker, sculptor, and painter. He was a primary pioneer of the Dada movement and Surrealism in Europe which hugely assisted in making him the famous man he is today. His artistic hand invented the technique frottage which is the use of pencil rubbings of textured objects and relief surfaces to create images.

Hannah Hoch.
Hannah Hoch was a German artist born on the 1st of November 1889 and died on the 31st of May 1978. She was a Dada artist who was known for her work of the Weimar period when she was one of the originators of photomontage.

The image pasted above really caught my eye because of the mixture of different shapes, styles, and colors. It's very creative as well as diverse and interesting.
Wangechi Mutu.
Wangechi Mutu was born on the 22nd of June 1972 and lives to this present day. She is a Kenyan American visual artist, best known for her; painting, sculpture, film, and performance work.
Picture link:https:https://www.saatchigallery.com/artist/wangechi_mutu
The image you see is a very unique piece of hybrid work by the artist. She innovatively incorporated human features with nonhuman images and molded them in a way to create what seems to resemble a face.
Romare Bearden.
Romare Bearden was born on the 2nd of September 1911 and died on March the 12th 1988. He was an American artist, author, and songwriter. He worked with many types of media, including cartoons, oils, and collages. Born in Charlotte, North Carolina, Bearden grew up in New York City and Pittsburg, Pennsylvania, and graduated from New York University in 1935.

The picture pasted above really shows the passion Bearden had for his work. The work of collage shows the warmth of a home and the love of a family through different prints of shapes styles colors and vibrancy.
MY HYBRID
CREATION 1.0
The
hybrid I created is a mixture of 3 animals. Those chosen animals consist of, a bear’s
body, a bunny rabbit's face, and ladybug wings. The first thing I did was copy
and paste a picture of a bear, I then removed its background and used the
eraser tool to erase its head. Then I copied and pasted a bunny’s face, removed that
background also, and used the eraser tool to remove its body, only keeping its
face. I made the eraser tool soft to help flush the edges of the 2 animals
together better. I then aligned these animals and used the smudge tool to blend
them into one. I repeated the process once more with ladybug wings.
MY HYBRID
CREATION 2.0
The
second hybrid I creature is a combination of 3 animals yet again. These animals
are the body of a shark, the face of a lion, and donkey legs. Alongside these
animals, I also input a background of a trampoline. The first thing I did was
copy and paste a shark onto my Photoshop. I then repeated that with a lion’s
head. Upon completion, I removed the background of both animals and used the
eraser tool on the soft setting to remove the shark's head and the lion’s body,
keeping the lines soft to allow them to better blend together. I then copied and
pasted a donkey into my hybrid creations. Using this donkey is softly erased everything
except the legs, aligned them with the underside of the shark's body, and used
the smudge tool to seal the donkey legs onto my hybrid.
Wednesday 25th. Today I created my artful text heading. I did this by creating a text box, importing my images, and creating a mask to hide the parts of the picture I didn't want to see. I created a white mask around my text so only the images in the text would be visible. I then, in my mask, erased part of the bird, allowing it to show through outside the text.
Monday 23rd September, Tone and Shading.
The tone is the depth of the color. It has to do with the pressure applied, the color, and whether it's warm or cold.
Shading is a way to create shadows and turn a picture into 3 dimensional. It can be Ombre or smudged.
During class, we had to draw a skull face on how we see it, and using charcoal and granite, create dimension and shadows as seen.
Joan Fontcuberta.
Joan Fontcuberta is a Spanish conceptual artist and photographer whose work includes many series and individual photos. His work is known for being subversive, deadpan, and convincing, and often uses the visual languages of journalism, advertising, and scientific journals.
Picture link:https://www.scienceandmediamuseum.org.uk/what-was-on/joan-fontcuberta-stranger-fiction Solenoglypha Polipodida- Position of Attack, made in 1987.
I think this piece of art is very interesting which is why I decided to input it and further talk about it. The photographed hybrid looks very realistic, combatting surrealism in his art, which plays a significant part in the overall, individual process of his art.
Picture link:https://www.juanmagonzalez.com/fontcuberta/herbarium.htmlHerbarium- made in 1983.
The photograph imported is very unique and that's why I chose this piece. The hybrid is simply a mix of the underside of what looks like a bird neck, and tatted petals, creating the look of an exotic plant. The image helps aid the idea that his work is known for making viewers question what they see and distrust photography.
The idea of merging 2 things together to create his own individual hybrid links closely to my work in the sense of merging 2 things chosen by myself and merging them together to make my own creature unique to me.
Monday 30th September, hybrid extension. On this day, we had to create our own hybrid using parts of a skull. We did this in the media pencil drawing, using tone and shading to create dimension. In my particular design, I used the eye socket of the skull for my hybrid face, the teeth for its legs, and cow bodice for the body, sheep ears, a mouse tail, and an octopus arm.
Stefan Mosebach.
Illustrators create images and drawings to communicate an idea or story, which are then used in various forms such as books, newspapers, magazines, greeting cards, and advertisements. Illustrators can understand and reinterpret a text written by an author which they then communicate into an illustration. Stefan Mosebach, who is a really good illustrator,
Stefan Mosebach studied graphic design at Folkwang University of the Arts. After his degree, he tried several jobs in the creative industry but he finally settled on illustration. He works for clients in the editorial and advertising sphere and currently lives in Hamburg and Amsterdam.I chose to talk about the picture above because I think it's very interesting and funny. The humorous hybrid portrays a woman in a silly pose with boots and hairy legs. What makes this image a hybrid is the fact that her body is made of a sausage. The comedic contrast in this picture really stuck out to me and that's why I chose it.
Fantastical Landscapes.
Terry Gilliam: Terrence Vance Gilliam is an American-British filmmaker, comedian, collage animator and actor. He started his career as an animator and strip cartoonist. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Terry_Gilliam
https://evecooper5508.blogspot.com/p/terry-gillian-photomontage.html
Above is a picture of his artwork. I really like this picture in particular because it's fun and unique and there's quite a lot going on. It's filled with very different, creative things, allowing much to see and talk about.
Salvador Dali: Salvador Domingo Felipe Jacinto Dalí i Domènech, Marquess of Dalí of Púbo was a Spanish surrealist artist renowned for his technical skill, precise draftsmanship, and the striking and bizarre images in his work. Dalí's artistic repertoire included painting, sculpture, film, graphic arts, animation, fashion, and photography, at times in collaboration with other artists. He also wrote fiction, poetry, autobiography, essays, and criticism. Major themes in his work include dreams, the subconscious, sexuality, religion, science, and his closest personal relationships.https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Salvador_Dal%C3%AD
https://www.etsy.com/uk/listing/532046402/available-now-ready-to-ship-original
I have pasted a picture above capturing the essence of his artwork. I like his work because it's very strange and not like any other. It's cool and different.
I personally like Terry Gilliam's work the best and, for me, it really portrays the idea of surrealism. I also like it best as it's more intricate and involving.
Museum of Natural History.
On Thursday the 3rd of October, we visited the Museum of Natural History. We discovered new things about animals, history and biology, and the anatomy of extinct and alive animals.
Inktober-inspired artwork:
I drew these images using ink, biro pens, and, after drawing individual images, incorporating them all together to draw my own hybrid. I enjoyed this task and found it quite fun and exciting.
My own landscape:
Using the pictures I took at the Museum of Natural History, I created my own landscape involving a bird, a dinosaur, a thought bubble, and a snowing aesthetic background.

My own landscape and hybrid. Though not fully completed, this is the painting of my own fantastical landscape and hybrid creature. I created the beast using a range of different fabrics and glued them down / together with a glue gun. The landscape I created using watercolor.

TV show/ movie hybrids:
Niklaus Mikaelson.
Niklaus ( known as Klaus) is the original hybrid from the TV show Vampire Diaries. He is a combination of a vampire and a werewolf. His initial goal was to break the curse that prevented him from liberating his werewolf side. In doing so, he sired his own super-species of werewolf-vampire hybrids.
Maui.
Maui is one of the protagonists in the movie Moana. He can transform into different species; however, trying to do so with a damaged hook results in him turning into a hybrid of half Maui and half Shark.
Leonora Carrington.
Mary Leonora Carrington was a British-born, Mexican surrealist painter and novelist. She was known for her haunting, autobiographical, somewhat inscrutable paintings that incorporate images of sorcery, metamorphosis, alchemy, and the occult.
https://artreview.com/armed-with-madness-the-surreal-leonora-carrington-by-mary-m-talbot-and-bryan-talbot-self-made-hero-book-review/
I like her artwork, this piece in particular, because it's very interesting, colorful, and partially confusing in a good way.
Hieronymus Bosch.
Hieronymus Bosch was a Dutch painter who was one of the most notable representatives of the early Netherlandish painting school. His work was generally made from the use of oil on oak wood.
https://www.myartprints.co.uk/a/hieronymus-bosch/tondals-vision.html
I quite like this work of art as not only is it an example of surrealism, but I also like the vintage look it has from the slightly dull color to the people. Remedios Varo.
Remedios Varo María de los Remedios Alicia Rodrigo Varo y Uranga was a Spanish Mexican surrealist painter. She was friends with fellow refugees from her European Surrealist circle, including artist Leonora Carrington.
https://www.theartnewspaper.com/2023/06/30/take-a-magical-mystery-tour-of-remedios-varos-surreal-paintings-in-major-exhibition
She made rather cool but peculiar paintings, this one specifically. I like it for that reason it's bold it's new and it's different in a way that I'm not quite sure what I'm looking at so it allows me to think about it.
Pablo Picasso.
Pablo Ruiz Picasso was a Spanish painter, sculptor, printmaker, ceramicist, and theatre designer. 'Guernica' is not only Picasso's best-known work, it's one of the most famous (and Google-searched) paintings in the world.
https://artuk.org/discover/artists/picasso-pablo-18811973
I really like all of Pablo Picasso's work but this in particular, named Guernica, is number 1. I love this because of the emotion portrayed through the use of surrealism and mismatched.
Jean Miro.
Joan Miró I Ferrà was a Catalan-Spanish painter, sculptor, and ceramist who combined abstract art with surrealist fantasy. Miró's work often depicted a world of strange, distorted figures, floating objects, and vivid colors, expressing a sense of freedom and playfulness.
https://www.guggenheim.org/artwork/artist/joan-miro
Posted above is a picture of his artwork that I chose as my favorite. I really like this piece because it doesn't necessarily come together to make something significant but instead is a bundle of little things that pair hand in hand to create this abstract work.
Frida Kahlo. Magdalena Carmen Frida Kahlo y Calderón was a Mexican painter known for her many portraits, self-portraits, and works inspired by the nature and artifacts of Mexico. She was best known for her uncompromising and brilliantly colored self-portraits that deal with such themes as identity, the human body, and death. Although she denied the connection, she is often identified as a Surrealist.
https://www.singulart.com/en/blog/2023/10/24/frida-khalo-paintings/
Frida Kahlo is personally one of my favorite artists and learning about her and her work always amazes me. The image above named 'Henry Ford Hospital' is a composition that serves as a surreal opera, with a fetus, a snail, and industrial elements forming a heart-wrenching symphony of life, loss, and resilience.https://www.singulart.com/en/blog/2023/10/24/frida-khalo-paintings/ I input another painting of her that I equally adore called 'The Wounded Deer' which transforms Frida into a wounded deer pierced by arrows. It’s a visual extravaganza that blends the ethereal with the earthly.
FINAL EVALUATION.
One of my favorite final digital items is the hybrid landscape I made using images from my trip to the Museum of Natural History. I made the image using Photoshop in which I imported a variety of images, some being from Google, some being my personal images. I faced a few problems while using Photoshop such as creating masks and adding/subtracting from them to mask/reveal certain parts of the images. Overall the task went fairly well and I succeeded in completion. One thing in particular that went well was making certain parts of the picture opaque to blend it more with the rest of the image. I think if I were to change/repeat anything the only thing I would do differently is make the edges cleaner and more blended where necessary.
My second favorite artwork I made practically was my own landscape and hybrid I made. I made the landscape using watercolor and a mix of brush strokes, dabs, and flicks. I created my hybrid using a mixture of fabrics. I took these fabrics, cut them out by the shape/ style I wanted, and glued them together/ on top of one another. I glued these together using a hot glue gun. The task was quite messy and one thing that went partially wrong and I would re-do is the fact that it was extremely difficult to maneuver and left a lot of unwanted strings across my fabrics. What I believe went very well was the cutting out of the fabrics. One skill you require is precision to cleanly cut out your shapes correctly.
