Inspirational people.

Experimenting with materials.
We used a variety of materials to create different shapes and styles. I used a lot of watercolor and ink, using the ink to write my name. I then used various other media to draw things as intricate as eyes and as basic as lines and swirls.

Below is a posterized image of my inspirational person, Anna Kendrick. I did this using the step-by-step tutorial, changing the tone three times. I used light pink, light blue, and light purple, keeping the colors light and partially pastel.

Once again, below, I pasted another posterized image of a person of inspiration to mine: Marie Curie. I wanted to give it a more contrasting look by differentiating the tone and lightness of the colors. I used a mix of four colors, including red, blue, pink, and black.

 Experimenting with media.

During today's class, which began on November 4th, we used a range of artistic materials and patterns/designs to get the lay of the land. Then, incorporating this, we created eyes. I made my eye using watercolor lines and strokes. I used watercolor, chalk, marker, and pen to draw a mixture of shapes and styles, including, but not limited to, swirls, squares, grids, ombre, dots, and splatters.

Above is an image of another inspirational person of mine, Kate Moss. I posterized this picture and used five color layers: pink, purple, yellow, light blue, and dark blue. I then added a frame on top of my image and made this in green. I then added some effects to allow for shadows and highlights in my frame to help the image stand out more and add slight dimension.

On Monday, November 11th, we had our art class, where we drew portraits. We initially started by drawing a grid to guide the face's proportions. We then pulled the face using a pencil and divided our grid into 4 or 6 squares/ sections; I did 4. Then, upon sectioning our picture, we colored each side using different materials. In the top left corner, I used colored pencils in pink, red, green, purple, and blue. On the square on the top right, I used watercolor and the colors brown, black, light brown, and blue. I used a marker on the bottom left square and the colors blue, pink, and red. On the bottom right square, I used chalk and used the colors yellow, brown, and pink. I like the watercolor and pencil squares best because they have the most detail.

Blue note.

• Blue Note is famous for what type of music?

Blue Note is most famous for its 'hard bop' music. Hard bop is a style of jazz that combines bebop with other forms of music, including soul, blues, rhythm and blues, and gospel.

• What is the difference between these vinyl records: album and single?

The most significant difference between a single and an album is the length of the release and the number of tracks. An album has at least 6 songs and is at least 30 minutes long, while a single has only 1 or 2 tracks and is less than 30 minutes long.

• Why do you think vinyl album cover designs were so admired? How is it different from buying a record today?

The main difference is the need for more connection and creativity. Album covers used to be tailor-made for the target audience to capture them. They were also created innovatively and specifically for the singer and their songs. I feel album covers could be more varied, exciting, and a better representation of the music/singer.

• Find out about Reid Miles, the designer of the album covers

Reid Milws was an American graphic designer and photographer best known for his work on the Blue Note album cover. However, he wasn't particularly keen on jazz music. During his career, he designed over 500 covers.

• Find out about Francis Wolff, the photographer of the album covers

Francis Wolff was a record company executive, photographer, and record producer who was a jazz enthusiast. His role in creating the Blue Notes album was extremely significant.

 • Pick three covers that you like

• For each, describe the design, type, images, and colors

Image 1:

It shows a lone man smoking with a rim of orange surrounding his face. The colors are minimal, only black, gray, orange, and a hint of pink. The picture also has some text.

It's a woman with a candle and a black cat on a plain background. The colors are, once again, incredibly limited in the fact that it's only black, white, and blue. It has one little piece of text and that's it.

Image 3:

It's a man playing the piano and singing. There is some text right in the middle and a bit more at the bottom. The colors in this picture consist only of gray, white, and a blue/teal kind of color.

• What do you like about each one? Explain why you picked each

Image 1:

I really like this image because it contributes to the edgy and mysterious feel of not only the band but jazz music altogether. The image of him smoking highlights the bad behavior, making them seem even cooler. The cloud of smoke surrounding his face helps guide you to the focus point, being the man's face whilst he smokes.

Image 2:

I really like this image, in fact, I; like it the most because the image of a shadowed mysterious woman, a candle, and a black cat make the cover look enticing through its dark nature. The image of a candle and a black cat with the woman is loosely related to the idea of witches and evil which adds more depth to the repetitive, dark feel their album covers keep having.

Image 3:

This is also a personal favorite of mine as it has so much passion. I really like this image because it's very powerful, vulnerable, and emotional. The joy on the man's face as he sings and plays the piano radiates through the screen and really makes you feel his love for singing, playing musical instruments, and jazz music overall.

• What styles from these could you try to use in your own work?

I like the subtle hint of evil that can't be inferred through the use of objects usually related to evil. I also like the use of something to help guide your attention to the focal point of the cover in image 1.

• Now pick any album or CD cover of your choice, describe the design, type, images, and colors, and explain why you picked it.

I really like this album cover as not only is it very beautiful, but it also holds powerful emotion. The creativity and use of skill to put this together look so simple, elegant, and sophisticated all at once.

• How is it different from the Blue Note designs?

Blue Notes album covers are simple and intricate all at once with some wording and dark mysterious colors, giving it a kind of edgy and cool look. The album cover I pasted above doesn't really have a wording and it is bright and vibrant and really screams its powerful emotion at you.

The history of art portraits.

Many believe that portraits originated from ancient Egypt, over 5000 years ago. Portraits are artistic representations of a person or a group of people that convey their personality, story, or importance.

Renaissance period:
This image is an art portrait of King Henry VI that was painted during the medieval period. The portrait was created by an unknown English artist and was painted in the 1540s. I really like the simplicity of this portrait, as it's just a plain portrait that is still so beautiful. I like the entirety of the art, including the plain background to allow to portrait to remain the focus point, the elegant, simple pose he holds, and the attention to detail that has been put into it.

Medieval period:
This image is an art portrait of  Richard II, king of England from 1367 to 1400. The portrait was painted by an unknown painter. I like this picture because of the feeling it gives. Just by looking at this portrait, you can feel how powerful the king is. I like it especially because it makes him look intimidating and important, and really emphasizes his role in society as one of importance.

Art Nouveau example:
The painting is called Reverie and was painted by a Czech painter called  Alphonse Mucha. This portrait is beautiful, which is why I chose it. The beautiful scenic background is a perfect representation of the beautiful lady in the portrait, and looking at such a work of art makes me feel peaceful and happy, upon seeing this beautiful, innocent woman looking so pure, tranquil, and pretty.

Pop art example:
The pop-art image above is a pop-art image of Frida Kahlo. The mix of the colors and their tone beautifully creates depth and feeling in the portrait. I like this portrait because the tone, colors, and shapes really help accentuate her natural but unique beauty and give the portrait like, power and emotion.

Pre-Raphaelite example:
This portrait artwork is called Mariana and was painted in 1851 by John Everet Millais. I really love pre-raphaelite portraits because they hold an abundance of emotion and beauty. I love this image in particular because It shows a beautiful woman who would appear to have her life perfect but is stretching out the burden in her back, showing the struggles deep within.

Cubist example:
This portrait is called a portrait of Pablo Picasso, which was painted in 1936 by an artist called Henriette Theodora Markovitch, known as Dora Maar. I really like this work because, to put it simply, it's funky and weird. I love the indifference it has and the mismatched features that somehow all pull together. I believe the work is incredible as it's so creative in finding beauty and art in something too strange.

Art Deco example:
This portrait is called Portrait De Romana De La Salle and was painted in 1928 by an artist called Tamara De Lempicka. I love this artwork at first glance, it kind of scared me and almost looked ugly, but an in-depth examination proves the image to be so beautiful. I like it because it shows a beautiful woman overcome with sadness and emotion, and it is portrayed incredibly in this portrait.

Princess Diana. I love this picture. She's sitting very confident and proud with an accomplished look on her face because she's very sure of herself. I don't like the huge collar they put on her. I would change the backdrop to be completely plain to allow the whole focus to be on her.
Emma Watson. I love this picture because it very well represents her. From her sleek hair to her smooth makeup, you can tell she bears no insecurities and is very put together. I don't like the background. I would change it by making it full body to show her in a stunning outfit, too.
Eminem. I love this picture because he's so nonchalant and swag. I like the way his head is held high, and he's not smiling to show his tough exterior. I don't like the fact that the pictures are quite gray, though it suits him. I would change it to maybe it is a picture of him performing instead, because his songs are amazing, and so is his performance.
David Walliams. I love this picture because the big, cheesy smile and the silly pose represent his light-hearted character and how relaxed and funny he is. I don't like the fact that his hairy chest is out.  I would change the color of the backdrop as it clashes with his blue velvet jumper.
Gordon Ramsay. I love this picture because he's got his arms crossed trying to act tough but can't stop the smile from piercing through his armor or aggression. I don't like the boring backdrop. I would change it to have him cooking something, where he is really at his best.

Constructivist Art Movement.

Constructivism is an early twentieth-century art movement active from 1915 until 1934. It was a Russian movement founded by Vladimir Tatlin and Alexander Rodchenko. Constructivist art aimed to reflect urban space and modern industrial society that rejected decorative style. Constructivists were in favor of art for social purposes and propaganda.

Soldier.
Painted in 1913, by Kazimir Malevich.
Kazimir Severinovich Malevich was a Russian avant-garde artist and art theorist.
I like the artwork of this image because it contains the finished product and a draft of it, almost showing part of the process. I also like the mismatched shoes and colors throughout the picture.

Satanic Ballet.
Painted in 1922, by Aleksandra Ekster.
Aleksandra Aleksandrovna Ekster was a Russian and French painter and designer.
I like this image because it combines many simple things to create one big, chaotic art piece. I like the many little red human figures randomly spread around the image, doing odd tasks.

Victory over the Sun: All is well that begins and has no end.
Painted in 191, by El Lissitzky.
Lazar Markovich Lissitzky was a Russian artist, designer, photographer, typographer, polemicist, and architect.
I like this artwork because it is very peculiar and appears confusing until you understand it.

By Bridget Mendler's constructivism poster.
I made the poster using Photoshop, in which I pasted a picture of Bridge Mendler and added colored shapes of variety in and around her. I also added some text from her songs to emphasize and highlight her greatness. Bridgit Claire Mendler is an American entrepreneur and former actress and singer. She became known as a child actress and continued acting into adulthood, which overlapped with a musical career in the 2010s. After enrolling at MIT and Harvard from 2017 to 2024, she co-founded a satellite data startup.

Inspirational collage:

We used tracing to create an outline of a posterized portrait of an inspirational person of ours. My person was Anna Kendrick. Upon tracing, we used a scalpel to cut different parts of the portrait to stick on to make a collage using colored paper and a glue stick. I didn't complete it, so here is the unfinished product so far.....
I'm not particularly fond of this art so far; however, upon completion, I believe I will really like it.

Diana, Princess of Wales.

https://www.royal.uk/diana-princess-wales#:~:text=Although%20the%20Princess%20was%20renowned,patron%20of%20over%20100%20charities.
Diana (born Diana Frances Spencer) was born on the 1st of July 1961 in England and died on the 31st of August 1997 in Paris, France, at age 36 in a car accident. Her mother was Frances  Roch , and her father was Edward John Spencer. She was the first wife of Charles, then Prince of Wales, now King of England. During her marriage, the Princess undertook a wide range of royal duties. Family was very important to the Princess, who had two sons: Prince William and Prince Henry (Harry).

After her divorce from the Prince of Wales, the Princess continued to be regarded as a member of the Royal Family. Her activism and glamour, which made her an international icon, earned her enduring popularity, and although the Princess was renowned for her style and was closely associated with the fashion world, patronizing and raising the profile of younger British designers, she was best known for her charitable work. During her marriage, the Princess was president or patron of over 100 charities.

The Princess did much to publicize work on behalf of the homeless and also disabled people, children, and people with HIV/Aids. Following her divorce, the Princess resigned most of her charity and other patronages and relinquished all her Service appointments with military units. The Princess remained as patron of Centrepoint (homeless charity), English National Ballet, Leprosy Mission, and National Aids Trust, and as President of the Hospital for Sick Children, Great Ormond Street, and the Royal Marsden Hospital.

In June 1997, the Princess attended receptions in London and New York as previews of the sale of several dresses and suits worn by her on official engagements, with the proceeds going to charity. Diana spent her 36th and last birthday on July 1st, 199,7, attending the Tate Gallery's 100th anniversary celebration. Her last official engagement in Britain was on July 21st when she visited Northwick Park Hospital, London ( children's accident and emergency unit).

Magazine cover:

Adjectives to describe her:
Brave, inspirational, loved, admirable, iconic, kind, fair, loving, beautiful, cheerful, humorous, humble, compassionate, friendly, warm, graceful, generous, thoughtful.

Bisa Butler.

Bisa Butler is an African American who uses an art technique called quilting and is well-known and famous for her vibrant, lifelike art pieces. Her passion spired from her childhood where she says  “As a child, I was always watching my mother and grandmother sew, and they taught me. After that class, I made a portrait quilt for my grandmother on her deathbed, and I have been making art quilts ever since.” Her artwork is widely known for appreciating and celebrating black life.
I really like this artwork as it's very abstract. I like the contrast between different colors and patterns and the vibrancy that radiates from the picture. Looking at the artwork makes me feel joy and happy as that's the mention that comes off the picture.

I also really like this piece of hers as it's a combination of a variety that comes together to create something quite beautiful. I like how she carefully chooses her media and colors to portray the beautiful face this woman has. The picture makes me feel peace and happiness looking at this beautiful portrait.

I used Photoshop to create this image. I got inspiration from an artist called Nacho Ormaechea to incorporate images in an intelligent way to represent her characteristics, emotions of personality, I chose to represent all 3. I used the image of her first appearance after her husband's adultery and added angry violent images such as the anger emotion to represent how she feels within. I also used yellow to surround her to represent the happy mask she reveals to the world.

Nacho Ormaechea:

Posted above is an example of Ormaechea's artwork. The image is a combination of a lone boy overlooking the water with an image inside his body of a semi-clear sunny blue sky and a fire tank. This image is one of my favorites because I think it really portrays emotion. The blue sky on his head shows a clear, happy head, and the fire tank ( it being correlated with danger) shows the suffering in his heart as he sits by himself and ponders over the water.

History of the selfie:

This is the first selfie ever taken by Robert Cornelius in 1839. It is impactful as it is the first selfie recorded, and I like it. I think it's very interesting as it's so different from a selfie nowadays, from the colors in the photo to the quality of the pose.

https://jonnathancoleman.medium.com/10-momentous-moments-in-the-history-of-the-selfie-169d7183c21d
This is a famous mirror selfie of  Anastasia Nikolaevna in 1914. It is also incredibly impactful and not at all different from the younger generation taking pictures today. The similar contrast is very cool to see, and I like the image because of that.

https://jonnathancoleman.medium.com/10-momentous-moments-in-the-history-of-the-selfie-169d7183c21d
This is an amazing selfie of Buzz Aldrin in 1966. I really like this photo because it's the first selfie taken from outer space. I like how quickly technology has evolved and how monumental this selfie is.

https://x.com/PopCulture2000s/status/1248651845532291077
This is a duo selfie of Paris Hilton and Britney Spears in 2006. I love this selfie it is in my opinion the most significant. I believe this because these girls were role models for almost everyone and in taking this selfie, inspired and encouraged others too as well. They both stated they "invented the selfie" with their iconic pose which started trends that still continue.

https://www.singulart.com/en/blog/2023/10/24/famous-self-portraits/
This is a self-portrait of Vincent van Gogh from 1889. I like this image as it has a lot of texture created through artwork and is a really good portrait of himself. I like the color palette he has used as well to create pigment and tone in the image.

https://www.singulart.com/en/blog/2023/10/24/famous-self-portraits/
This is a self-portrait of Frida Kahlo completed in 1940. I love this picture because I think it's very significant and I love what it represents. The representation of reliance and pain is very impactful for everyone including girls and women.

Kodak Brownie Box Camera:
The brownie was first released in 1900 and introduced a snapshot. It was a basic cardboard box camera with a convex-concave lens.

Joseph Byron Clayton:
In 1909, Clayton took a selfie by holding a camera backward at arm's length.

Handheld shutter releases:
These were invented to make it easier to take selfies.

Mirrors:
Selfies were often taken in a mirror, and this influenced many a trend up until today.

Tripods:
Selfies were sometimes taken with the camera on a tripod.

Phone:
The first camera phone was invented in 1997, but the first commercially available camera phone was released in 2000 and was used by software developer
Philippe Kahn to take the first picture using a camera phone. He took it of the birth of his daughter.

I think the next stage of development for the selfie will be being forced to take selfies and upload them regularly, and use selfies to gain access to things like buildings.

Julian Opie:

Julian Opie was born in London in 1958 and lives and works in London. He attended Goldsmiths School of Art and graduated in 1982. He is best known as a visual artist of the new British sculpture movement and the use of the style of pop art.

Artwork inspired by Julian Opie:

During art class, we used our previous traces of our inspirational people (mine being Anna Kendrick) and created a very simple drawing of them. Upon completion of this task, we filled in certain areas with different colors using different media; I used oil pastels. I used pink, blue, orange, and red. Once we filled the areas using our chosen colors, we then deepened the pencil lines at the beginning with a black marker. This is all inspired by an artist called Jullian Opie.

Above is an example of Jullian Opie's earlier work. This is called Dave Rowntree and was created in the year 2000. I quite like this as it's cute and simple and appears as If there's not a lot going on when in actual fact the colors, the facial expression, and the way he holds his head are all a reflection of the person.

This is an example of Julian's more recent artwork. It is called Mechanic and was created in the year 2014. I like the differentiation this has in comparison to his earlier work. I also like that it has more detail, thus emitting more emotion through tone. Shape and depth in color. It looks like he has drawn an abundance of layers on different pieces of paper and stacked them on top of each other to make some look more faded, creating an ombre effect. It also looks like a marker was used to achieve the clean, thick lines.

Codes and conventions:
This is Boris Johnson's book cover. The autobiography contains an image in black and white, a title, and a subtitle. I like the cover's simplicity, from the plain colorless portrait of himself on the front page to the basic title being his name.
This is a magazine cover of Margot Robbie for the magazine Vogue. It has a colorful image, a title, a sub-title, and an award-winning comment on her. I love this magazine cover as it portrays her beauty and boasts of her achievements to highlight the significance she has.

This is a DVD cover of a band called The Cranberries. It contains a main image, a sub-image, a title, a sub-title, an accredited DVD sign, and a list of the songs the specific DVD has on it. I like the cover as it recognizes Dolores 0'Riodan's importance in the bad and her obvious skill, talent, and passion for her career.

Halsman:
Philippe Halsman was a Latvian-born American photographer known for his portraits of Marilyn Monroe and collaborations with Salvador Dali. He was born on 2 May 1906 and died on 25 June 1979.  He is famous for his photography, specifically his use of the style surrealism.

I love all of these images as they're so lively. I love what the images represent and the joy and sheer happiness that radiates from each picture. I love the randomness of his photography and the use of surrealism to create something so unique.

Titarenko:

I really like his work as it's not like I've ever seen before. I think it's extremely creative and I love the way he's manipulated certain parts of images to fade into a cloud-like look.

Global warming is a massive issue in today's society, not just in England, but worldwide. The climate is drastically changing due to pollution. This comes from throwing your rubbish on the floor to driving a car unnecessarily. This affects everyone, literally everyone. People campaign for the issue to be resolved every day, fighting to bring back life and stop this impending doom that If we keep progressing like this, the world will be unsustainable, and life as we know it will cease to exist.

Andy Warhol.

Andy Warhol was born on August 6, 1928, in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, and died on February 27, 1987, in New York. He was an American visual artist, film director, and producer who was a significant figure in the pop art movement and was well-known for it.

https://www.masterworksfineart.com/artists/andy-warhol/screen-print/tomato-soup-campbells-soup-i/id/w-6834
Tomato soup, Campbell's soup. This is one of Warhol's most famous pieces and is part of a series of such. The artwork is significant and a part of art worldwide, and I like it for its significance and the effect it has. I also like the subtlety and how monumentally it portrays the pop art era very well to those who know of the art piece.

https://news.masterworksfineart.com/2019/11/26/andy-warhols-shot-marilyns
Shot Marilyn. This artwork is amazing and definitely one of my favorites from Warhol. I love not only the dramatic use of pop art, but also marMarilynnroe. Additionally also love the story behind it being named "Shot Marilyn" and think it's very funny and interesting.

https://www.myartbroker.com/artist-andy-warhol/series-cats-named-sam
A cat named Sm. This is another example of Warhol's work. I like this because it is very unique and random but still funny and interesting g look at.

Magazine sketch:
I am going to include a variety of content in my magazine including the masthead, an image of my inspirational person (Emma Watson), her name and some information about her, some quotes from her, the logo of a university she attended, the author of the magazine (me), and the date of creation of such magazine.

Andy Warhol:

These are my images inspired by Andy Warhol. The art style is called pop art, which influenced not only his work but now mine too. I painted the first one using watercolor, I painted the second one using chalk/ oil pastels and I painted the last one using ma arker. I really love the art style of pop art and my favorite painting of the three is the first one I did using water.

Block Prints:
Above are the first sketches, whilst I was trying to decide what final sketch I wanted to do.

During our lesson on the 9th of December, we made prints of repetitive drawings using ink, rollers, Styrofoam blocks, and sculpting tools. We made prints of our choice onto the Styrofoam blocks using the sculpting tools. We then rolled out some ink evenly onto some laminated paper and stamped the block into the ink; the idea was to coat the block with the drawing in an even layer of ink. We then stamped the ink-covered block onto some paper of our choice ( I used pink paper) to create multiple prints on the paper.

Below is the image I chose of my inspirational person before I changed it. I removed the background to incorporate my own, and posterized the image to make it my own.

Final evaluation:

For my final inspirational person, I decided to change paths slightly and go with Emma Watson. I chose her as my inspirational person because she is my favorite film and I look up to her; she is beautiful, smart, educated, and funny. My final piece was a magazine cover of my inspiration person, influenced by other magazine covers of her. I used these magazine covers of hers, changed them around, added my own things, and made them my own. I did this by first making a sketch of what I wanted it to look like and what I wanted in it. I then used my sketch to create my final piece using a software called Photoshop. I followed my plan pretty well .I just rearranged some things to fit/ look better. Initially, I was stuck with things to add, but researching magazines about Emma Watso, gave me lots of inspiration, and I used a lot of impactful quotes from Emma Watson herself. Within the magazine, there is a barcode, the brown university logo, the Gryffindor logo, the date, the author, and quotes and phrases from/about her. The whole process went pretty smoothly, barring the fact that I couldn't find a picture to match the aesthetic at first. Eventually, after lots of searching, I found a picture that doesn't conflict with the colors and instead complements them. The rest of the process went well, and I enjoyed creating this magazine cover., I enjoyed playing with fonts for the text and rearranging where things were placed to find the best fit. I incorporated a lot about her passion for feminism and women's equality as it is a subject I am personally passionate about and love to hear other women back me up, it's another reason why I chose Emma WtsonWatsone, and she shares the same passion for this huge problem and would love nothing more than to tackle it. Overall, I really liked completing this task and am very satisfied with the finished product.
